This course examines a famous experiment which took place in Athens in the 5th century B.C.E. It was called "democracy." Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will explore the culture, ideas, and society of ancient Greece. By close attention to primary documents -- including written texts and artistic and architectural works -- we will investigate the social, religious, intellectual, and aesthetic life of the Classical Age, its background and aftermath. Where possible, we will examine the interaction between Greece and the larger world, and we will consider the effects of ancient Greek values on life today.
